Dark vs. Evil
The distinction between "dark" and "evil" is also found (as I recall, its been a while) in Jungian psychology. Jung called it the Shadow Self. It is composed of all the traits that the self finds undesirable. The self denies and represses these traits since it cannot accept that they are a part of its makeup. Jung believed that the Shadow is not necessarily evil, but because it is repressed and denied any other form of expression it manifests itself as evil. If the Shadow could be acknowledged and given a more positive way of expressing itself, it was thought that it would cease to behave in an evil manner. Perhaps this would explain why people can suddenly so completely reform their lives when faced with a crisis that requires they grow or else.
