"I do have to say that I have at least a half dozen friends who have never smoked, were always moderately active to very active individuals who loved skiing, golfing, swimming, riding their bikes, etc., have never been over weight, drink very little alcohol, and have relatively healthy eating habits, the exceptions being trying various restaurants on vacations or indulging in non-typical foods on cruises. Only one in the six has a diabetic in the family. This is very perplexing to me and peaked my interest in reading this article to see if there truly is anyway to avoid this very life changing disease. One of the mentioned friends has already had several amputations and is headed for dialysis soon, one has died very prematurely, four are trying to cope with the restrictions and complications of their conditions."

It's interesting to me that people are blamed for type II diabetes. It is called the disease of the fat -- yet actually it's diabetes that makes people gain weight alarmingly (insulin stimulates weight gain). (Sure there are just some gluttons that get the disease but that doesn't mean it absolutely correlates).

I think there is something in the diet or in our environment that causes diabetes but with everyone pointing the finger at lifestyle -- and hey - everyone probably does something not completely healthy sometime during their life...it's getting no nearer to getting solved.

It is really alarming the number of children affected.
