It was suggested in another post that we tend to put our thumbs up for "equality", even though we don't really know what it is we're supporting and/or won't really live up to it when a dire situation comes along.
That's why I thought we might talk about it and see if we can inject some actual meaning into an otherwise "talismanic" term.

My question is this:
Does equality even exist? What criteria do you use to examine that equality/inequality? What do you really mean when you say people are equal/unequal?

"This is why you fail" *yoda shakes head sadly...

j/k :P

I don't think equality exists except as a intangible idea - real world observation would suggest a modified survival of the fittest. A lot of times society tries to instigate equality through homogenizing and limiting the highest high and lowest low which in a way works...but there are many good arguments that point out its a terrible idea...but anyway, intangibles are an area humanity really doesn't deal with too well with. :D

In the same vein as Seven's post that equality is a bit of an intangible idea it kind of falls along the same line of thought as "Peace is a lie." All you have to do is look around and see that neither exist in an actual form. Peace defined as a type of harmony, however, does have meaning. Equality as an idea of not putting stumbling blocks in front of person group A that you do not put in front of person group B can be more tangible.

Incidentally giving advantages to person group A that person group B does not have is not equality either.

People need to work with what they have and not expect someone else to give them "a move up." They need to earn it.

Thomas Jefferson said that there is a natural aristocacy among persons and it is an aristocracy of ability.

Jedi Master Rivan, well done.

Quoting Jefferson, with respect to his attitudes
on merit, is an excellent way to
bring about the downfall of the Jedi way
of life here.

Jedi here do not care for the virtue of merit,
that is the virtue of merit over
the virtue of equality or the virtue
of peace.

Passion not peace, my Jedi Master,
is the spirit of most, if not all,
doctrines of merit, which spawns values
antithetical to the Jedi way
(the self-made person, wealth and power
through competition, and
political elitism).

Merit is, for many Jedi here, a path to
the dark side.

I agree with what Rivan stated.

Despite the world clearly not being one of equality - all of nature is geared towards survival of the fittest (and I'm NOT talking about physical fitness necessarily), allowing ALL people to compete on equal terms does seem like a good idea.

Otherwise those in power will make sure the one's they want stay in power. Take for instance Aryas's zionist theory. If what he says is true, we have a group of radical Jews palying the world against each other just to make sure only Jews have the upper hand. Not very fair if you ask me.
